Managing Aphasia in a Culturally Diverse World

Author: Brett McCardel, MS, CCC-SLP

In September of 2007, the Multicultural Task Force of the National Aphasia Association was formed in order to enhance the understanding and intervention of aphasia and its consequences in different linguistic and sociocultural environments.⁣

There is an increasing number of non-monolingual persons with aphasia in the US, with varying degrees of bi/multilingualism and dialect use. Given this, the likelihood of Speech-Language Pathologists working with bi/multilingual people with aphasia is increasing, and SLP’s need to be properly equipped to provide services.⁣

At the 2010 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s National Convention, the task force came together to present their recommendations on best practices for working in a culturally diverse world, placing emphasis on the 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥/𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, the need for providers to practice 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, and the importance of 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬’ 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞.⁣
