Aphasia therapy is all about building relationships. As much fun as it is to dig into the treatment research or geek out over the psycholinguistics and neurology behind what is going on, the most important piece in therapy is to build a genuine connection with the person right in front of you.
In fact, Worrell (2019) interviewed people with aphasia and their family members regarding what qualities they thought made for an effective clinician. People with aphasia in this study reported that they found therapy to be most effective when they had a genuine relationship with their clinician!
By using Supported Conversation techniques and a Life Participation Approach to Aphasia, we can help our clients get back to living a full and meaningful life. While we as SLP’s are the experts in communication, our clients are the experts in their lives and what sort of supports they need.
Let’s make our therapy all the more effective by developing genuine relationships and working together with our clients!
Best,
