While some people with alexia will be relatively successful reading single words, they may encounter difficulty reading at the sentence-level. ๐ โฃ
โฃ
When assessing reading at the sentence-level, it will be helpful to look at factors beyond just decoding/reading single words in order to determine where the breakdown in reading lies. ๐ โฃ
โฃ
Cognitive-linguistic factors to consider when assessing reading at the sentence-level include:โฃ
โฃ
๐ฆ๐๐ป๐๐ฎ๐
: difficulty understanding word order and thematic roles (e.g., WHO is doing WHAT) within a sentence can lead to misunderstanding the intended message of a written sentence โฃ
โฃ
๐ ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ต๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐: word structures must change in order to fit the grammatical rules of English, and vulnerabilities in morphological skills can make it difficult to understand factors such as tense and pluralityโฃ
โฃ
๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ/๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ช๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ ๐ฒ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐: difficulty reading may also be due to difficulty attending to an entire sentence and following through to its completion; in addition, working memory vulnerabilities may make it difficult for a person to keep track of all the thematic roles and details within a sentenceโฃ
โฃ
โฃ
If you suspect vulnerabilities in any of these domains, there are a variety of assessments you can consider using to help better determine reading difficulties:โฃ
