When assessing reading skills at the paragraph/discourse-level, emphasis is typically placed on comprehension of stated and implied main ideas
By utilizing a paragraph/discourse-level assessment, you’ll get better insight into your client’s inferencing skills, the effect of text length on comprehension, and better insight into how reading difficulties may impact functional reading tasks in everyday life (such as reading a menu or reading an online news article)
There are several standardized assessments available that you may consider using, including:
-Discourse Comprehension Test
-Gray Oral Reading Tests—5th Edition
-Nelson-Denny Reading Test (Forms I & J)
Additionally, informal assessment may be utilized through reading articles from services such as @newsela (an amazing resource that provides current news articles written at different reading comprehension levels)
Paragraph/Discourse-level assessment provides an opportunity to see how language vulnerabilities at the single word and sentence-levels impact reading performance in a functional way, along with providing insight into what sort of metacognitive strategies and environmental supports may be appropriate for your client (more on that to come soon!)
